Royal Spoonbill - Platalea regia

This is a beautiful bird I loved to watch. The way they swooped the bill back and forth to catch something worth eating. I looked up information about them but can´t find anything about that peculiar bill. Why is there a hole in the lower beak? Maybe saving weight? or letting the water pass while they reap whatever they find.

This bird goes by many names. Some mentioned in the labels section. If my memory don´t fail me I saw this one in Honolulu.
